Need to integrate cultural wisdom with modern education: ex-IIT prof
Shimla, August 28
There is a need to integrate cultural wisdom with modern education to support holistic development of the youth. This was stated by Padma Shree Awardee Dr Kiran Seth, Ex-professor and Professor Emeritus at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, during an expert lecture on the topic ‘Indian Knowledge System’ that was held in The University Institute of Technology (UIT), Himachal Pradesh University here today.
Seth, who established SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) to promote traditional Indian arts and values, stressed the importance of incorporating cultural elements into the educational environment.
He said that education should extend beyond traditional academic learning to include the cultural and ethical values rooted in Indian heritage. He suggested that such integration would not only enrich students’ educational experience but also help them develop into more thoughtful and grounded individuals.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof (Dr) A J Singh, Director, UIT, HPU, Shimla, highlighted the importance of founding a SPIC MACAY club at UIT. The director said that this initiative would provide a valuable platform for students to explore their interests in Indian heritage and participate in cultural activities. “By fostering an environment that values cultural appreciation and artistic expression, the SPIC MACAY club will contribute significantly to the campus culture, creating opportunities for student involvement and personal growth,” he said.
“Dr Seth delivered a compelling session to the students. His presentation highlighted the crucial role of Indian culture and values in shaping educational experiences” said AJ Singh, Director, UIT.
He further said that the audience, including faculty and students, engaged deeply with Seth’s message during an interactive discussion on practical methods for integrating cultural teachings into the curriculum. “This session was part of a wider effort to rejuvenate and maintain traditional Indian arts and philosophies within contemporary educational settings,” said Singh.
