In a significant milestone in the ongoing four-laning of the 17.456-kilometre stretch of National Highway-05 from Kaithlighat to Shakral village, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully completed the construction of a 1,295-metre-long tunnel, reducing the travel distance by 10 to 12 kilometres. The tunnel, costing Rs 267 crore, is located between Ranghav village and Bhad village in Shimla district.

Col Ajay Singh Bargoti, Regional Officer, NHAI Shimla, said the tunnel forms a crucial link in the Kaithlighat–Shakral section of the Shimla Bypass, which posed formidable geological and hydrological challenges due to the complex Himalayan terrain.

“The proximity of Jutogh and Jaunsar Thust formations led to highly fractured and unstable rock conditions, compounded by severe water ingress at multiple points. Despite these demanding conditions, the tunnel contractor’s experienced and technically sound team rose to the occasion. Employing advanced tunnelling methodologies and real-time geotechnical monitoring, the team adapted dynamically to changing strata conditions. Precision engineering, meticulous planning, and around-the-clock dedication enabled them to tackle each obstacle with efficiency and

safety,” he said.

“The breakthrough is not just a structural achievement, but a reflection of the spirit, resilience and professionalism that define modern infrastructure development in mountainous terrain,” said the Regional Officer.
