Kinnaur, July 9

The mortal remains of Havildar Rohit Negi from Tranda village in Kinnaur district were brought to his native village on Tuesday, nine months after his martyrdom.

The last rites were performed with full state honours. The ceremony saw the presence of the Commander of the Dogra Scouts, who led the salute, while the administration officials, including Tehsildar, Bhaba Nagar, Arun, and a police contingent, were also present on the occasion.

Hundreds of villagers gathered at the place to bid a tearful farewell to the 26-year-old martyr. The air reverberated with “Rohit Negi Amar Rahe” (long live Rohit Negi).

Havildar Rohit Negi, who was serving in the Dogra Regiment, lost his life in the first week of October last year during a mission on the Kashmir border, where he and his fellow soldiers were buried under an avalanche. While one soldier’s body was recovered shortly after the mishap, the search for the others continued, leading to the discovery of Rohit Negi’s body four days ago.

The Army transported his remains from Kargil to Leh, then to Chandigarh on July 8. From Chandigarh, the body was taken by road to Rampur and arrived at his village, Tranda, by 10 am on Tuesday. As his remains reached Chaura, a large number of district residents gathered at the place and raised patriotic slogans, escorting the procession to his home and finally to the cremation ground.

There, the community paid its respects, and the cremation was carried out with state honours.
