Merely 24 per cent women clear the physical proficiency test meant for the recruitment of constables in Sirmaur district due to stricter norms.

“Of 2,178 women candidates, who appeared for recruitment from February 11 to 13, only 535 qualified while 1,640 were disqualified for failing to meet the required parameters,” said Sirmaur SP Nischint Negi. As many as 3,014 candidates were called for the fitness test but 836 were reported absent.

In Mandi district, as many as 21.62 per cent males qualified the physical standard test in the first five days. As against 6,748 youth who appeared, only 1,459 cleared it, said officials

As many as 1,088 constables, including 380 women, are being recruited from across the state in various districts. A candidate having Class XII qualification in the 18 to 26 years age group is eligible to compete for the post.

With few employment avenues available in the government sector, a large number of women candidates had arrived at the Nahan police lines for the physical fitness test.

With eligibility conditions like time taken to complete 800 m and 100 m races, besides the height of field activities having been revised after the last recruitment drive held in 2021, fewer women managed to qualify the physical proficiency test in Sirmaur district.

For the male constable recruitment, too, the prescribed standards have been revised compared to 2001.

Since fewer candidates will manage to qualify the physical proficiency, the number of those appearing for the subsequent written examination will also be fewer as compared to thousands who appeared in the earlier recruitment drives.

“The revised parameters will ensure that aspirants, who maintain an apt level of fitness, will be selected for the job while those according little attention to physical fitness will lag behind,” said an official.
