Shimla, March 6

Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi today said that universal cartons would be used for the packaging of apple from the upcoming season. The minister added that telescopic cartons would be banned for packaging of apple and action would be taken against the growers those who still used telescopic cartons.

“The growers will not be allowed to use telescopic cartons even if they are selling their produce outside the state mandis. Action would be taken as per rules if someone uses any other carton,” said Negi.

Negi further said that the decision to introduce universal carton was in keeping with their poll guarantee of ensuring remunerative prices to the growers. “To ensure good prices for the growers, we started selling apple by weight last year. In another step in that direction, we have decided to use universal carton from the coming season,” he said. “The notification in this regard is almost final. The apple will be sold in universal carton. The growers and corrugators should prepare accordingly,” said Negi.

Sohan Thakur, president of the Seb Utpadak Sangh, said it was welcome decision. “The minister has fulfilled the long-standing demand of the growers and it’s going to benefit them. However, it needs to be implemented strictly and monitored as anti-grower forces would try to scuttle the move,” he said.

Lokinder Bisht, president of the Progressive Growers Association, also hailed the decision but raised some fears as well. “The impact of the decision needs to be monitored and safeguards need to be introduced as growers may struggle to get good price for their B grade produce in universal cartons,” said Bisht.
