The Arya Samaj launched the 11th session of a free sewing training course for needy girls and women of Nurpur town and surrounding rural areas on Sunday to hone their self-employment skills. The Arya Samaj had launched the women empowerment initiative five years ago with financial support from its members and philanthropists.
Swami Ved Prakash, head of the Atma Pragya Ashram, Baghni (Nurpur), gave away certificates, mementos and stitching accessories to the trainees of the 10th session on behalf of the Arya Samaj. Veena Mahajan, in-charge of the sewing training school, said that so far, 120 girls and women had been imparted stitching training. She added that the Arya Samaj, Nurpur, had started the stitching course with an objective to instill self-confidence in women and provide them with an opportunity to become self-reliant so that they could support their families financially.
Swami Ved Prakash, while presiding over the ceremony, lauded the members of the Arya Samaj for their selfless social service and running a free sewing training school for women and an Ayurvedic dispensary. He said that the Arya Samaj was a socio-religious reform movement that also worked as a social organisation. “Swami Dayanand Saraswati had founded the Arya Samaj in 1875 with the dual goals of reviving Vedic principles and implementing reforms to address social issues like caste discrimination, child marriage and the sati custom,” he added.
The Swami said that the Arya Samaj’s activities included education, spiritual guidance and various social services for the betterment of society. Chander Prakash Mahajan, president of the Arya Samaj, thanked the philanthropists for extending financial support for running a free Ayurvedic dispensary and sewing training sessions at the Arya Samaj building. He said that an Ayurvedic doctor and some retired employees of the Medical Department were rendering free service in running this dispensary every Friday. Former local MLA Ajay Mahajan was also present on the occasion.
