Nurpur police secure detention order against drug peddler
The Nurpur police have intensified their crackdown on inter-state drug mafias operating in border areas, securing a detention order under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act against a habitual offender. This marks the third such detention order issued within a week by the Secretary (Home) cum Detention Authority, Shimla.
According to police sources, the latest order targets Shamsher Singh, son of Gurdiyal Singh from Seerat under Damtal police station jurisdiction. He was arrested on July 30, 2023, with 10.1 grams of heroin (chitta) and ?8,500 in drug money. Investigations revealed that he had been apprehended thrice between 2022-23 for drug-related offenses and had resumed peddling after securing bail.
Nurpur SP Ashok Ratan said the police had submitted a detention proposal to the Secretary (Home) on September 26 last year, which was approved on Monday. The offender has been re-arrested, and authorities will soon launch a financial probe into his assets.
The SP emphasised that the PIT-NDPS Act serves as a powerful deterrent against habitual drug smugglers who continue their illegal trade despite multiple arrests. With increasing enforcement measures, police aim to dismantle the drug networks threatening border areas.
