Olympian inspires Himachal youth to pursue sports

Students of the Department of Physical Education and the Directorate of Physical Education & Youth Programs of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) were inspired to pursue sports during an interactive session themed ‘’A Journey Towards the Olympic Podium’’. The event was organised by the university, with Olympian Vijay Kumar Sharma serving as the keynote speaker.

Sharma, an Indian shooter, has brought glory to the country by winning a silver medal in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 2012 London Olympics. He has also been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and the Padma Shri. Additionally, he has won several gold and silver medals in World Cups and Commonwealth Games, enhancing India’’s prestige.

During his address, Sharma emphasised that following the process and maintaining discipline are crucial factors in achieving goals. “In a competitive life, one must adopt focused training to sustain concentration and mental peace,” he said. He also noted that sports offer immense career opportunities, but they require continuous dedication and perseverance.

Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of HPU, served as the chief guest and urged students to focus on the present, participate in sports activities and show dedication in their research as well. During the session, students asked questions to the Olympian, which he answered in a simple and inspiring manner.
