An eight-year-old boy was killed when a tree uprooted due to a storm fell on him in Bilaspur. The District Emergency Operation Centre of the District Disaster Management Authority said, property worth over Rs 29.16 lakh was damaged in the incident, said Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh here yesterday.

He said that a boy was killed while his father was seriously injured after an uprooted tree fell in a slum located near the Mini Secretariat at Barsar. He added that the deceased was identified as Abhishek Kumar while his father Sarwag Sahani, who is a migrant labourer, was seriously injured.

The Deputy Commissioner said uprooted trees severly damaged power lines and poles. He added that about 1,347 power supply lines had been affected in the district.

Amarjit Singh said that in the past 24 hours, a kutcha house was partially damaged due to the storm and three concrete houses also suffered damage. He added that three cowsheds were also damaged.

He said officials of various departments had been instructed to assess the damage caused to crops and properties and submit a report.
