In a determined effort to curb the menace of drug trafficking, the Sirmaur police has once again registered over 100 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for the second consecutive year. A total of 131 cases were registered in 2023, while 103 cases were recorded in 2024. This steadfast approach has been accompanied by the arrest of 159 offenders in 2023 and 157 in 2024, underscoring the district police’s relentless commitment to dismantling the drug trade.
One of the most significant aspects of this crackdown has been the strategic focus on breaking the drug supply chain. Employing a thorough backward linkage investigation, the police not only apprehended offenders from other states but also arrested a foreign national involved in the network.
This demonstrates the police department’s resolve to tackle the drug trade at its roots and disrupt the operations of those behind it. Furthermore, the police have increased their focus on cases involving commercial quantities of drugs. In 2023, seven such cases were registered, but the number surged to 17 in 2024, reflecting a targeted and effective approach against major traffickers.
The magnitude of narcotics seizures over the past two years highlights the severity of the issue and the police’s success in combating it. In 2023, Sirmaur Police confiscated 20.329 kilograms of cannabis, 375.34 grams of opium, 3,579 opium plants, 250.877 grams of heroin, 8,131 intoxicating capsules, and 1,472 bottles of intoxicating syrups. In 2024, the seizures included 18.852 kg of cannabis, 58.10 grams of opium, 5,991 opium plants, 462.55 grams of heroin, and 18,403 intoxicating capsules. These actions have dealt a severe blow to drug trafficking operations in the region.
Additionally, the Sirmaur police has focused on crippling the financial backbone of the drug trade. In 2023, illicit assets worth Rs 13.70 lakh were confiscated. This figure saw a dramatic increase in 2024, with over Rs 1 crore in illegal earnings being seized.
