Former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar, who is Kayakalp’s president, said a state-of-the-art old age home with 64 suites would come up here by next year on the premises of Kayakalp. He said all basic amenities to the elderly people would be provided at the centre. These will include medical facilities, common or individual kitchen, etc. Besides, there will be a provision of meditation and yoga. A temple is also being constructed on the premises.

He said almost 70 per cent construction of the complex is complete and efforts were on to complete it by 2021. Shanta Kumar said in the current scenario, when the joint family culture is fading, there was an urgent need for an old-age home in Palampur. He said the managing body would announce the tariff soon. The facilities will be made available only to needy persons.

Shanta Kumar said the Supreme Court, in its recent judgment, had observed, “The Union Government and various state governments have utterly failed in containing untold miseries and indignities experienced by the elderly people due to insufficient number of geriatrics care centre, social security coverage and old age homes in the country.”
