The burning of industrial waste by a private industrial unit at the Gondpur area of Paonta Sahib led to a big fire here, leading to panic.

The black fumes triggered panic among residents who were initially unaware of the source of the fire.

The fire brigade and locals rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze. A huge quantity of inflammable waste material from the industrial unit had been thrown out in the open. It suddenly caught fire, posing a threat to the nearby industrial units.

The waste material, including inflammable items like thermocol, sponge, etc., was reportedly thrown by Himalayan International Company in a vacant plot. Staff from two other nearby private industries rushed to extinguish the fire. They called the fire brigade when the blaze started spreading. The fire brigade controlled the blaze and averted a major accident.

State Pollution Control Board, Nahan, Regional Officer Pawan Sharma said a junior engineer (JE) had been directed to investigate the matter. Post-inquiry, it will become clear whether it was an accident or the fire was set deliberately, he added. As per the rules, industrial waste material cannot be burnt in the open.
