Parents must focus on the proper upbringing of their children, as it is not only a parental duty but also an integral part of child rights. This was emphasised by Justice SS Thakur during a one-day National Seminar titled ‘Child Human Rights: Emerging Issues and Concerns’, organised by the Department of Laws at Himachal Pradesh University today.

Justice Thakur stated that the successful implementation of laws concerning child human rights requires collaboration between the government, society and parents. He also stressed the importance of shielding children from the negative effects of the internet and instilling values based on Indian culture. He mentioned that the United Nations (UN) established a charter of children’s rights in its 1989 convention, which has been approved by 192 countries.

In his address, Prof Rajinder Verma, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University and Chairman and Dean of the Law Department, highlighted that despite having several laws protecting child rights, violations still occur. He asserted, “To effectively implement these laws, it is necessary that we all cooperate and discharge our responsibilities.”

He further pointed out that preventing violations of child rights cannot solely depend on legal frameworks; instead, collective efforts from every individual, along with societal cooperation, are required.

The keynote speaker for the opening session, Prof Preeti Saxena, Vice Chancellor of National Law University (NLU) Shimla, discussed the status of child human rights at national and international levels, supported by statistics and examples.
