Patent filing takes centre stage at HPU worskshop

The Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Prof Mahavir Singh, inaugurated a one-day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) today as the chief guest. He announced that the university will provide financial support to researchers and faculty members for filing patents and other IPR-related applications.

The workshop was organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), HPU, with funding support from PM-USHA. Deans, directors, chairpersons, research scholars and faculty members participated in the event.

During his address, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of patents and other IPRs for academic institutions and praised the IQAC team for organising such a timely and relevant workshop. He also urged faculty members to engage with the recently established five research centres at HPU to promote innovation and research collaboration.

The programme began with a welcome address from Dr Ramesh Thakur, Director of IQAC, who greeted the dignitaries, resource person and participants. He specially acknowledged the support of the Dean of Planning for funding the workshop. Dr Thakur said that the primary objective of the workshop was to raise awareness about intellectual property, safeguard innovations and explain the patent filing process. He added that such initiatives would greatly benefit research scholars and faculty members, while fostering a strong research culture within the university.

The technical session, conducted by Suresh Kumar, focused on “Patentability and Drafting.” He introduced the concept of patents, patent certificates and fee structures, and elaborated on the significance of novelty and industrial applicability in the patent filing process.

The session received positive feedback from participants. Prof BK Shivram, Dean of Studies, appreciated the presentation delivered by the resource person. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Geetika Sood.
