US Club-Ridge road caves in after heavy rain in Shimla

A stretch of the road near the Home Guards office between the US Club and The Ridge caved in early morning today following a landslide triggered by incessant rains in Shimla city. However, no loss of life was reported as there was no commuter or vehicle on the stretch when the incident occurred.

Cracks have also developed on The Ridge and the ongoing shooting of a film is putting burden on the stretch, which could prove dangerous. Meanwhile, two persons in Bilaspur and Solan died in rain-related incidents, taking the death toll during the current monsoon season to 434. As many as 611 persons have sustained injuries and 12 persons are still missing.

As many as 261 roads (160 in Shimla, 39 in Mandi, 32 in Sirmaur, seven in Bilaspur, six each in Kangra and Solan, five in Hamirpur) are closed.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rain continued to lash several parts of the state. Naina Devi received the highest 181 mm of rainfall, followed by Kandaghat and Sangrah 65 mm each, Solan 63 mm, Shimla 55 mm, Pachhad and Rohru 45 mm each, Jubbal 44 mm, Una 43 mm, Narkanda, Khadrala, Kufri and Jubbarhatti 41 mm each, Kasauli 39 mm, Mehre 37 mm, Nahan 36 mm, Kotkhai 35 mm, Renuka 34 mm, Kumarsen 31 mm, Paonta Sahib 29 mm, Sundernagar and Karsog 28 mm each, and Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Banjar 25 mm each. Keylong was the coldest at 6.6°C while Una was the hottest at 34°C.
