For the past few years, the poor drainage system at Indira market in Mandi has become a cause of concern for the businessmen as well as the visitors.

Due to the lack of a proper drainage system, stagnant water can often be seen accumulated in the drainage system, emitting to a foul smell during the summers. The stagnant water also poses health hazards to the traders and the visitors.

Known as the heart of Mandi, Indira market is located in the middle of the town and sees heavy footfall of visitors. Many come to the area due to the booming shopping complex here. The market also houses a clock tower, which is a major attraction for the visitors. The martyrs’ memorial and the parks in the market are also frequented by the tourists.

According to Ashok Sharma, a shopkeeper at Indira market, the poor drainage system has affected the business of shopkeepers here. The stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes during the summers, he added.

“On several occasions, demands were put before the incumbent governments but to no avail. There is an urgent need to address this issue for the convenience of businessmen as well as common visitors,” Sharma said.

Beopar Mandal (Mandi) president Raja Mahendru said, “During the summers, the situation gets worse when the stagnant water emits a stinking smell. Mosquitoes are a frequent sight in the market. Stink and mosquitoes greet tourists. It also poses a health risk to the businessmen.”

“In the past, we raised this issue with the district administration and the previous BJP government but no concrete action was taken to address this issue. Now, we urge the Mandi MC authorities, district administration and state government to fix the drainage system on priority,” he added.

Mandi Mayor Virender Bhatt said, “We are planning to find a solution to the faulty drainage system.”
