Electricity supply to the government primary school at Salwala in Paonta Sahib subdivision has been disconnected amidst extreme cold weather conditions over a pending bill of Rs 5,000.

School Management Committee member Vinod Choudhary said it was lamentable that the state government had become so poor that it was not able to pay electricity bills of a few thousands rupees.

Demanding restoration of electricity connection at the earliest, he said, “Studies of 210 students, who are enrolled in the school, are getting adversely affected due to the lack of electricity.”

Many highlight that services to consumers, including industrial and commercial units, are rarely disconnected despite outstanding bills of lakhs of rupees. While 200 teachers are being sent to Singapore for an exposure visit under the Samagra Shiksha, students and staff of a rural educational institute are suffering over an electricity bill of Rs 5,000.

Arundeep, Assistant Engineer, Electricity Department, said about 20 days ago, a notice was issued to the school regarding the bill. After it failed to pay the amount, the department was forced to disconnect the power supply as per rules. He said there were many other educational institutions with pending electricity bills.
