Protesters detained outside Chinese embassy in Delhi
Members of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) today held a demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi to mark the 66th anniversary of ?Tibetan National Uprising Day.
While the protesters, holding placards, were demonstrating outside the embassy, some of them tried to storm its premises but were immediately stopped by security personnel deployed there.
The security personnel overpowered the protesters, including women, and bundled them into a bus. The Delhi Police detained around 24 protesters.
TYC general secretary Sonam Tsering said that the day marked a painful and tragic chapter in the Tibetan history, one that they would never forget. “It is the 66th anniversary of the Chinese Communist government’s illegal and violent invasion of Tibet. Since then, both Tibetan government and its people have endured decades of systematic oppression, terror and repression under Beijing’s rule,” he added.
He alleged that China’s efforts to erase Tibet’s distinct cultural and linguistic identity had escalated, with the Chinese government deliberately attempting to replace the internationally recognised term ‘Tibet’ with the Chinese term, ‘Xizang’.
Tsering said, “The human rights situation in Tibet has drastically deteriorated in recent years with severe restrictions on fundamental rights.”
