Punjab gangsters target Una businesses, demand ransom
Gangsters from Punjab have been targeting businesses in Una district, demanding ransom and spreading fear among the local business community. According to sources, two jewellers and two stone crusher owners have received threat calls from Punjab-based gangsters, but none have lodged a formal complaint with the police due to fear.
A recent arrest by the Jalandhar police revealed the extent of the extortion racket. A henchman, Manjot Singh alias Mani, of a gangster was arrested and allegedly confessed to accepting Rs 50,000 in advance to kill a Una-based businessman. The accused claimed he had struck a deal to eliminate the businessman for Rs 5 lakh.
SP Una, Rakesh Singh, confirmed that the police are investigating the matter and are in touch with the Jalandhar police to gather more information. However, no formal complaints have been filed by the residents of Una.
The issue was taken up during a high-level meeting of police officials in the region. Una district borders with Hoshiarpur and Ropar districts of Punjab. Sources said that many Punjab-based gangsters, through their links in Una district, have become active in the area.
The issue has sparked concern among the local authorities, with Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri warning officials to deal strictly with anti-social elements in the district. The incidents of crime and use of firearms in Una district have increased over the past few years, prompting the government to take action.
