Incessant rainfall on Wednesday wreaked havoc in parts of Salooni tehsil in Chamba district, triggering landslides and damaging houses.
In Bhedwah village under Nadl Gram Panchayat, a major landslide occurred around 2 pm on Wednesday beneath a house.
The family was inside the house when the land below it suddenly gave way. On hearing a loud noise, nearby villagers rushed to the spot.
The family immediately vacated the house and took shelter at a neighbour’s home. Local ward member Deepak alias Danny, who was among the first responders, said the two-storey house was completely unsafe for habitation. He added that the incident was reported promptly to the Revenue Department and efforts are being made through the panchayat to arrange relief assistance.
In another rain-induced incident, a cattleshed collapsed at Mohan village in the Bhajotra panchayat.
Some locals, who were nearby, managed to rescue the cattle in time, preventing any loss of livestock.
Panchayat pradhan Neena confirmed the incident and said an official request for administrative assistance has already been submitted.
Local elected representatives and panchayat authorities have appealed to the administration for immediate inspection to ensure appropriate compensation and relief measures.
