Rajgarh, a key subdivision in Sirmaur district, hosts an Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) sub-depot that underscores the significant infrastructural and operational challenges faced by the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation. Established nearly six years ago, the sub-depot was intended to improve public transport services in the region. However, the promises of better connectivity and enhanced facilities remain largely unmet, leaving residents disheartened.

Despite being designated as a sub-depot, Rajgarh lacks crucial infrastructure, including a functional workshop, permanent mechanics, a dedicated office building and sufficient staff. Operations are hindered by a limited fleet, with some buses covering multiple local routes. When a bus breaks down, it causes the disruption of two to three routes, inconveniencing daily commuters.

The absence of Himachal Road Transport Corporation’s direct bus services from Rajgarh to major destinations such as Shimla, Chandigarh, Haridwar and Delhi further exacerbates the situation. Local residents, including social workers and community leaders, have repeatedly voiced their frustration over the lack of action from successive governments.

The inefficiency of the sub-depot has become a point of contention, with residents noting that buses often fail to operate on schedule and that repairs cannot be carried out locally due to the lack of a workshop. In addition, freedom fighters from the Pajhota area have expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of a direct bus service to Rajgarh, a long-standing demand that authorities have ignored.

The challenges faced by the sub-depot have sparked resentment among locals, who feel let down by both the previous BJP government and the current Congress regime. Some have described the sub-depot as “a white elephant,” serving no real purpose for the community.

Further concerns have been raised regarding the need for direct bus services from Rajgarh to vital medical facilities such as Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (IGMC) Shimla and PGI Chandigarh. These services would significantly reduce the travel burden for those seeking healthcare.

Despite repeated assurances from visiting ministers and officials, progress remains stagnant, leaving locals sceptical about any future improvements.

The Rajgarh sub-depot’s current state not only limits the mobility of residents but also hampers the overall development of the region.

To fulfil its intended purpose, immediate action from the state government and HRTC authorities is required, including the establishment of a proper workshop, recruitment of permanent staff and the introduction of direct bus services to key destinations.
