Ravinder Singh remembered on 28th anniversary of his sacrifice
A solemn ceremony was organised at the memorial of Amar Shaheed Ravinder Singh in his native village of Shiva-Sunog, where the ‘Pauranik Sainik Sangathan’ (Ex-Servicemen’s Association) of Paonta Sahib-Shillai region, along with the martyr’s family, villagers and panchayat members, paid heartfelt tributes to the brave son of India. The event, organised at 11 am on January 19, commemorated the supreme sacrifice of Ravinder Singh, the only son of his parents, who gave his life for the nation.
Ravinder Singh, a soldier in the 9th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment, was deployed in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir, in 1997. On January 19, 1997, he displayed exceptional courage and made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting against the enemy. His dedication to serving the nation in difficult terrains during the 1990s highlighted his patriotism. For his parents, the loss of their only son was a life-altering tragedy, but they have carried on with resilience and dignity, becoming a symbol of strength.
Ravinder Singh’s parents, Sunder Singh and Kamla Devi, now live with their extended family, including his cousin Kedar Singh and his children. The villagers and the wider region take pride in Ravinder Singh’s sacrifice, which continues to inspire generations.
During the ceremony, the Tricolour was unfurled at the memorial by Ravinder Singh’s parents and members of the ex-servicemen’s association, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Attendees laid floral tributes at the memorial, chanting patriotic slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Shaheed Ravinder Amar Rahe.”
In their speeches, members of the ex-servicemen’s association urged the youth to dedicate themselves to the service of the nation, highlighting the courage and sacrifice exemplified by Ravinder Singh. They also praised the martyr’s parents for their strength and the values they instilled in their son, which inspired him to serve the country.
Prominent attendees included Ravinder Singh’s parents, Sunder Singh and Kamla Devi; his cousin Kedar Singh; local panchayat leaders Babita Devi (Pradhan), Rakesh Chauhan (Vice-Pradhan) and former Pradhan Surendra. Key members of the ex-servicemen’s association, including vice president Mohan Chauhan, secretary Suresh Deva, and members Vijay, Mamchand and Subhash Chauhan, along with other villagers and dignitaries.
The gathering concluded with a renewed pledge to honour the sacrifices of the armed forces and a commitment to uphold the values of patriotism and service to the nation, as embodied by Shaheed Ravinder Singh.
