Mandi, August 19
Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan has issued an order under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (CRPC 144), mandating that all businesses, contractors, farmers and individuals in Mandi district must register any labourers hired from outside the state or the district at the local police station. The registration must include complete details and photographs of the labourers, according to the order.
All street vendors and contract workers residing temporarily in the district must also register at the police station. Violations of this order may result in legal action against the migrant workers or their employers.
The DC noted that the Superintendent of Police had highlighted the increasing number of migrant workers coming to the district. It was necessary to register the workers at police stations and verify their details from their original locations to prevent any potential threats posed by antisocial elements disguised as job seekers, he said.
The DC expressed concerns that some migrants might have dubious backgrounds and could pose a risk to law and order in the district. There had been a rise in crimes against women associated with migrant workers. Many employers were unaware of their workers’ backgrounds and whereabouts, raising the possibility of involvement in antisocial activities and posing a serious threat to public safety, Devgan said.
To address these issues, the district had mandated the registration of migrant workers at police stations, the DC added.
