Various Left-supported organisations, trade unions and social rights groups under the banner of Jan Ekta Jan Adhikar Andolan (JEJAA) today protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).
The JEJAA activists submitted a memorandum to the President of India charging that the CCA and NRC violated basic tenets of the Constitution and hence these should be repealed.
These organizations voiced their concerns at a seminar on the topic “State sponsored attack on the Constitution and basic services’’.
CPM secretary Dr Onkar Shad, Kissan Sabha state president Dr Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, Wakf board chairman of state Maulana Mumtaz Ahmad Quasmi, former Mayor Sanjay Chauhan, AIDWA state president Falma Chauhan, All India Lawyers Association state president Puneet Dhanta spoke on the topic and opposed the CAA and NRC.
Sanjeev Bhushan, a senior high court advocate claimed the CAA was not only against the basic spirit of Constitution and its Preamble, it also violated Article 14 and 51 of the Constitution. He said that under Article 14 every citizen is equal before the Constitution irrespective of his caste, sex, creed, religions, colour and origin.
