Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu should step down as he had lost the moral right to continue in office as his own ministers and MLAs had lost faith in his leadership.

Addressing a press conference here today, Thakur said ever since the formation of the Congress government, there has been resentment among the ministers, MLAs and party leaders against their leadership.

“The state government faced a political turmoil as there was a revolt against Congress leadership and six MLAs quit the party. Even Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh had announced his resignation after the defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections,” he said.

Thakur said now the son the senior most minister in the Cabinet is talking of his father’s resignation from the Cabinet. “The minister like Vikramaditya Singh has been placated but it is more than evident that there is growing resentment against the leadership of the Chief Minister,” he said.

Thakur also questioned the silence of the state government on the allegations of large-scale irregularities in the police recruitment case. “Today police candidates themselves are making allegations of rigging in recruitment and the government is not willing to conduct an investigation. “The state government is not at all serious on the issue and attempts are being made to hush up the matter. The government must make public the facts in the case,” he demanded.

Thakur said if there are allegations of cheating in police recruitment then the exams must be held again. “If in the death of Chief Engineer Vimal Negi a pen drive found from the body was formatted, the possibility of destroying the CCTV footage in the police recruitment cannot be ruled out,” he said.

The former Chief Minister lamented that in the last two-and-a-half year Congress rule, Himachal is lagging behind in every sector.

“The Congress had promised to provide five lakh jobs in five-year tenure during the run up to the Assembly elections. Despite the educated youth’s frustration, no efforts have been made to fulfil this guarantee,” the LoP said.
