Mandi, December 23

To avoid traffic jam on the Manali-Leh highway between the north portal of Atal Tunnel and Sissu in Lahaul in the coming days, the district administration, Lahaul Spiti, has restricted the parking of vehicles on the roadside.

The district administration has developed a parking lot at the Sissu helipad where at least 2,000 vehicles can be parked. The move is aimed at ending the traffic jam and provide parking facility to the tourists.

Since Atal Tunnel was thrown open to traffic, it has become a tourist hotspot. A large number of tourists are thronging the Lahaul valley to enjoy the view of Atal Tunnel.

Pankaj Rai, Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti, said: “It is expected that during Christmas and New Year, the tourist influx to Lahaul will increase. To avoid traffic chaos, we have decided to restrict parking on the roadside.”

The DC asked the police to implement the directions and deal with offenders strictly.

He said a core committee had been constituted for the purpose of monitoring tourism and sanitation in the district.

He urged the tourists to cooperate and follow the directions to avoid any legal action.

A cleanliness campaign was launched at Sissu today by the Mahila Mandals and Yuva Mandals of Sissu and Koksar panchayats.
