Ridge readies to honour Virbhadra

Statue of legacy: Shimla prepares for a historic tribute to its tallest leader

Shimla is witnessing a rare buzz as the city braces for the grand unveiling of the statue of late Virbhadra Singh, the six-time Chief Minister and towering political figure of Himachal Pradesh. The event, scheduled for Monday at The Ridge, marks a historic moment. Singh will be only the second Chief Minister after Dr YS Parmar to have his statue gracing the heart of the city.

To ensure the event unfolds smoothly, security has been tightened across Shimla, with around 400 police personnel deployed. The police have divided the city into five security sectors covering The Ridge via IGMC to Sanjauli, Christ Church to Hotel Shivalik, Scandal Point to CTO and Old Tibetan Market, Mall Road to Lower Bazar to the Lift and from Takka Bench to Jakhu.

Parking plans in place

Given the expected rush of thousands of attendees, a special traffic and parking plan has been rolled out. Vehicles arriving from Theog, Rampur, Rohru and Chopal will be parked between Chalaunthi and Dhalli bypass, with an alighting point for light vehicles at Auckland Tunnel. Those entering from Solan, Arki, Bilaspur and Shimla (Rural) will be directed to parking areas between Boileauganj crossing, Tavi-Mod and Chaura Maidan.

Movement of transport and utility vehicles within the city will remain suspended till 3 pm to maintain order. “All necessary measures have been taken to ensure public convenience and a peaceful event,” said Shimla Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi.

A stage set for history

The Ridge, shimmering with decorations and fresh arrangements, has been transformed into a stage of remembrance. From dignitaries to ordinary citizens, thousands are expected to gather to witness the unveiling of a leader whose political journey shaped Himachal’s modern identity.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu earlier directed officials to ensure seamless coordination, a fitting tribute to a statesman whose presence still echoes through the hills of Himachal.
