Concerned about the growing drug menace in Himachal Pradesh, the state government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on drug traffickers. With increased raids and surveillance, the state is determined to curb the trafficking of narcotics, which has become a pressing challenge for the region.

CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has implemented a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and recently sought the Centre’s intervention during a virtual meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. CM Sukhu emphasised the need for stronger security at the state’s borders and intensified surveillance at all entry points, including popular tourist destinations.

The drug trade in Himachal Pradesh is closely linked to interstate corridors, with many consignments entering from Punjab, which shares a long border with the hill state. Despite these challenges, the state police and security agencies have been vigilant in their efforts. Recent drives by the Kangra and Shimla police have led to the arrest of over 400 individuals involved in interstate drug trafficking and the seizure of significant quantities of heroin and charas.

However, the state faces a grim reality, as youth, including school students, have increasingly fallen prey to drug abuse. Narcotics like heroin are smuggled into Himachal from neighbouring states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, worsening the situation. Officials report that many young professionals and students are not only consuming drugs but also becoming part of the trafficking networks.

One particularly alarming trend is the rise in injectable drug use among the youth, which poses severe health risks and could lead to a spike in HIV/AIDS cases in the region.

In addition to the crackdown, the state government plans to establish a drug rehabilitation centre to support individuals struggling with addiction. Officials and community leaders are also calling for greater public awareness and education to combat the drug menace and safeguard the younger generation.

Himachal is resolute in its fight against drugs, with the CM and state authorities urging collective efforts to save the state’s youth from the devastating grip of narcotics.
