Road accidents in Himachal witness over 17% decline
Road accidents in Himachal Pradesh have dipped by 17.21 per cent in 2025 as compared to the preceding year. In 2025, a total of 551 road traffic accidents have been recorded across the state during the first four months, while in 2024, during the same period, as many as 668 road accidents were reported in the state.
As per the Himachal Pradesh Police records, the highest number of road accidents have been recorded in Shimla district (76), followed by Sirmaur district (67).
Similarly, as many as 60 road accidents have been reported in Mandi district, 49 in Una, 48 in Kullu, 44 in Solan, 42 in Bilaspur, 39 each in Kangra and the Baddi Barotiwala Nalagarh (BBN) region, 27 in Nurpur, 20 in Chamba, 16 in Hamirpur, 14 in Dehra, eight in Kinnaur and two in Lahaul and Spiti district.
Vinod Kumar, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Traffic Tourism and Railways, said the decline in total number of road accidents is a result of effective measures being taken by the Police Department.
He said campaigns against drunken driving, which is one of the primary reason behind road accidents besides over speeding and rash driving, were also launched by the police.
Kumar added that the Police Department is using advanced technologies, like Alco sensors, Doppler radar and laser speed meters, to regulate and enforce motor vehicle laws effectively. “Besides this, police personnel are also being trained to enhance their investigative skills, by providing them with knowledge and tools required for effective enforcement and improvement of road safety,” Kumar said.
