Road caves in after landslide in Sainj valley

The Neuli-Shanshar road in the Sainj valley of the district was damaged due to a landslide yesterday. The movement of four-wheelers came to a halt on the route, as the road caved-in after a support wall collapsed. The orchardists of the area are worried as to how they would transport their apple and other produce to the markets.

Villagers said that while the condition of the 14-km road was already bad, it started worsening during the rainy season. They added that consignments of fruits and vegetables are transported to the marketing yards through this road and several vehicles commute on it everyday. The problems of farmers and villagers have increased with the closure of the road connecting the valley.

PWD Executive Engineer, Banjar, Chaman Thakur said that the road would be repaired soon. Though less rainfall had been reported this year, people in some areas of the district had faced troubles due to heavy rains.

Kullu ADM SK Parashar said that no loss of life or property had been reported due to rains in the district so far. Landslides had occurred on some roads and orders had been issued to restore them, he added.
