Himachal: Safety alert boards to help reduce road accidents
In a bid to improve road safety and curb accidents in the state, the Himachal Pradesh police has decided to use LED boards displaying road safety alerts, with the first board being installed near Government College, Kangra today.
With this digital display board, police aim to increase awareness among the drivers by displaying various alerts, including total number of road accidents, total number of fatalities and injuries caused due to road accidents. The display board will also show the total number of drunk driving challans, no of licences cancelled and over speeding warnings.
Additional Superintendent of Police ASP, Traffic Tourism and Railways (TTR) Narvir Rathour, said on the directions of DGP Atul Verma, police has launched a new initiative for road safety awareness using digital display boards. He said that more road safety alert display boards will be installed across the state in the coming days.
“As part of our technological upgrade, we are installing speed display boards to caution motorists about their speed and emphasise the importance of adhering to speed limits. This will help reduce instances of over-speeding, one of the primary causes of road accidents,” said Rathour.
“These modern solutions are part of the Himachal Pradesh Police’s commitment to reduce road accidents and improve public safety. The implementation will prioritise accident-prone zones across the state, providing timely and crucial information to road users,” he said.
“With these initiatives, we aim to enhance road discipline and improve overall traffic management. Our goal is to save lives and create a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians alike,” added Rathour. He further said that over-speeding was a leading cause of accidents. “People should always stick to speed limits and drive safely. Reckless driving puts everyone in danger,” he said.
He appealed to the people to adhere to these digital advisories. As per the data shared by police, 485 persons have lost their lives in road accidents this year so far while 2,200 have suffered injuries. The state has recorded 1,305 road accidents. Licences of 380 persons gave been suspended for driving under influence of liquor while 1,379 challans have been issued for the same.
