Dharamsala, August 19

A pall of gloom descended on Sugnada village, near Nagrota Surian, as the body of Hardeep Singh, who was missing since July 31 after a cloudburst hit Samej village in Shimla, reached his home on Monday.

A project manager in Greenco Company, the 45-year-old had gone missing on July 31 night when a flashflood washed away 22 houses.

Hardeep’s son lit the pyre as the last rites were performed at Nagrota Surian, his native place. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, Hardeep’s sisters cried inconsolably on seeing their only brother wrapped in a shroud. People from his village, besides neighbouring villages reached Hardeep’s house.

Hardeep’s body was found 17 days after the tragedy near Shimla. The police and administration identified the body by matching its DNA with that of his father’s.

BJP leader Sanjay Guleria was among those who reached the crematorium and paid his last respects to Hardeep Singh.
