Schools join forces with police ‘War Against Drugs’ sports drive

As part of the district police’s special campaign, ‘War Against Drugs’, an athletics competition was held at Police Ground in Hamirpur on Thursday, drawing over 400 students from 13 local schools to compete in various track and field events.

The event was inaugurated by Amarjeet Singh, Deputy Commissioner, in the presence of Bhagat Singh Thakur, Superintendent of Police and other police and administrative officials.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner Singh said the campaign, launched by SP Thakur, is showing positive results in tackling drug abuse in the district. He added involving schoolchildren would help transform the campaign into a mass movement.

“Children get very limited physical exercise due to modern lifestyles,” Singh said. “This affects not only their physical health, but also their mental, intellectual and emotional development, which is a serious concern. It is essential to bring children out of closed rooms and onto the sports field. The district police have done commendable work to combat drug abuse.”

The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted SP Thakur’s background as a national boxing player and his personal interest in sports, which inspired the creation of the new sports ground.

SP Thakur praised the participation of teachers and students, crediting them for the event’s success. He also shared updates on the achievements of the ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign. Other officials present included Rajesh Kumar, Additional SP; Nitin Chauhan, DSP Headquarters; Lalman Sharma, DSP Barsar; and Harish Guleria, DSP.

In the evening, SP Thakur presented awards to the winners of various events. Competitions included 100m, 200m, 400m, 1,000m and 5,000m races, with both boys and girls participating.
