Nurpur, June 30
The SDM, Jawali, has come to the rescue of Priyanka Devi (16), an orphan, who had been facing mental ordeal for the past few years after the death of her father and re-marriage by her mother.
After her father’s death, she started living with her aunt at Pathankot and completed her matriculation. Recently, she came to her grandmother at Jawali, but the latter refused to give her shelter and other relatives also refused to help her.
The girl approached the SDM, Jawali, who further approached the Child Helpline, Dharamsala, yesterday and handed over the girl’s custody to women staff of the helpline.
She was also tested for Covid infection. The girl has been kept in the temporary open child care shelter home at Sakoh (Dharamsala).
Ramesh Mastana, director, child care shelter home, said the girl would be shifted to the Child Care Institute at Garli. “The institute is being run by the state government. At least 43 abandoned girls are getting free education and boarding facilities,” he added. — OC
