Himachal: Seats in technical courses in medical colleges increased

The state government has decided to raise the number of seats in technician courses in the medical sector after nearly 23 years. The decision comes in the light of an acute shortage of trained technical staff in various health institutions, which has been impacting the delivery of healthcare services. Besides, the installation of modern machinery requires trained manpower and the decision will help provide quality healthcare.

A government spokesperson said that the number of seats had been increased to provide training in courses like B.Sc (Medical Laboratory Technique), B.Sc (Radio and Imaging), B.Sc (Anesthesia and OT Technique) from 10 to 50 each in the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital, Shimla, whereas the number of seats in B.Sc (Medical Laboratory Technique), B.Sc (Radiology and Imaging) and B.Sc (Anesthesia and OT Technician) had been increased from 18 to 50 seats each.

He said that the increase would ensure more youth from the state could receive quality training locally, reducing dependence on institutions in other states. The state government was also actively creating and filling posts in the healthcare sector and expanding training opportunities for nursing and paramedical staff, he added.
