Seema college renamed after Virbhadra Singh

Government Post Graduate College, Seema, Rohru, in Shimla district today has officially been named after late and former six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and will now be known as Raja Virbhadra Singh Government College, Seema.

A notification regarding the change of the name of the college has been issued by the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in which it has been mentioned that the name of the college has been changed as per the instructions of the state government.

On February 2, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla had written a letter to the university regarding re-naming of the college. In the said letter, the Governor had directed the university to rename the college as Raja Virbhadra Singh Government College, Seema, with immediate effect, in public interest. Last year, during the annual function of the college, incumbent CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had announced to rename the college in the name of the veteran Congress leader, thus honouring the legacy of the former CM.

Situated in Seema village, about 6 km from Rohru, the college was established in 1988 with a strength of only 16 students. The campus is spread over an area of approximately 3.35.94 hectare and offers variety of courses. At present, as many as 2,000 students are enrolled in the college.

Rohru has been an important Constituency in the political career of Virbhadra Singh and has been his stronghold. Throughout his career, Singh contested Legislative Assembly elections from Rohru seat five times– 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2007, and won all the elections with huge margin. In the 1990 elections, he had received 89.06% votes in Rohru where as in 2007, he had received 60.56% votes in the Legislative Assembly seat, which was the last year he contested and won the Rohru seat.
