The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, inaugurated a two-day national seminar titled ‘Historical and Philosophical Roots of India’s Strategic Culture: From Antiquity to the Present.’ The event began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, invoking the wisdom of ancient Indian texts such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Kautilya’s Arthashastra — seminal works that continue to shape Indian perspectives on war, peace and diplomacy.
Mehar Chand Negi, Secretary of IIAS, delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the seminar. Dr Sumit Kumar from the University of Delhi outlined the objectives of the event, highlighting the importance of engaging with India’s intellectual and philosophical traditions to understand its evolving strategic mindset.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr Sheshadri Chari, Emeritus Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University, who emphasised the enduring influence of India’s ancient philosophical traditions on contemporary strategic and diplomatic choices.
Over the course of the two days, scholars from leading institutions — including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Pondicherry University and IIAS — will explore themes such as the evolution of India’s strategic culture, domestic strategic imperatives and regional cooperation frameworks.
Day two will feature focused sessions on the foundational roots of India’s strategic outlook and the rising role of soft power diplomacy in India’s global engagements.
