The rivalry between Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) intensified as the SFI accused the ABVP of blackening and disfiguring its posters and wall paintings in the university. The SFI demanded the university authorities take strict disciplinary action against ABVP workers.

Terming this as a shameful act, SFI campus president Yogi stated that erasing the SFI’s wall paintings, dedicated to democratic ideology and student welfare, with black paint was an attack on ideas, democracy and the voice of students.

“The SFI has been committed to building a democratic, progressive and debate-oriented environment at Himachal Pradesh University since 1978. The character of student politics here has always been rooted in ideological struggle, dialogue and the fight for equal rights. However, at a time when the university needs stronger debate, discussion and an academic atmosphere, an organisation like ABVP, driven by fascist ideology, is continuously trying to disrupt the environment, spread intolerance and create tension among students,” he said.

“Attacking the walls of the campus is an attack on the values of democracy. This act clearly shows that ABVP works for oppressive politics and not for student welfare. Such act appears to be part of a conspiracy to incite unrest and conflict in the university,” said Yogi.

Meanwhile, ABVP activists have denied the allegations and said an investigation to find the culprits was underway.
