Sherlock Holmes Society of London, BCS stage play
The Sherlock Holmes Society of London and Bishop Cotton School (BCS) staged ‘The Mystery of the Missing Maharaja’.
The Society’s visit to the former summer capital of the British Empire brought the spirit of Sherlock Holmes to Shimla. The event, organised at Irwin Hall at BCS last evening, featured a performance that included six students from BCS, alongside Headmaster Matthew P John.
“This event marked the fusion of literature, history and drama, celebrating the legacy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective while weaving in the rich cultural tapestry of India, particularly Shimla,” said Headmaster Matthew P John. Hosted at one of India’s most historic educational institutions, the production offered an evening of intrigue, deduction and masterful storytelling.
The radio play ‘The Mystery of the Missing Maharaja’ is set against the backdrop of colonial India, where Holmes and Watson are drawn into a high-stakes investigation surrounding the disappearance of a Maharaja. The performance featured students and faculty from BCS, collaborating with members of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, blending theatrical finesse with historical authenticity.
This initiative reflects BCS’s commitment to fostering literary appreciation and dramatic arts among its students, while engaging in global cultural exchanges, said the Headmaster. The school has long been a hub for intellectual and creative endeavours and this production adds another feather to its cap, he added.
With an evening of mystery, intrigue and exceptional performances, ‘The Mystery of the Missing Maharaja’ proved to be a treat for enthusiasts, history buffs and theatre lovers alike, who turned out in large numbers to the event.
