Shimla civic body plans to boost heritage tourism
The Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) has proposed to boost heritage tourism. The MC has planned to offer tour guides and use e-carts to showcase the heritage sites to the tourists.
Throwing light on the proposal, Surender Chauhan, Mayor, Shimla MC, said we want to give a boost to tourism sector and provide indepth knowledge about the heritage buildings and sites situated in the town.
“As Shimla used to be the summer capital of the country under the British, many historic decisions have been taken here. The town has many buildings that are reminiscent of the British era and attract lakhs of tourists from across the globe every year,” he said.
“With this guided tour, tourists will be able to explore the heritage buildings in the town in a much better way. Not only this, the initiative will also provide employment opportunities to locals as the eligible person can be appointed as a tour guide,” said the Mayor.
Shimla, which was developed during the British regime houses several heritage buildings such as The Christ Church at the Ridge, The Townhall, Gaiety Theatre, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS) formerly known as the Viceregal Lodge, Bantony Castle, etc.
These heritage sites are one of the most sought after sites among the tourists as every year, lakhs of tourists make a beeline to witness these heritage buildings.
