Shimla divided into five sectors to manage snowfall

Shimla has been divided into five sectors to manage snowfall, with a nodal officer appointed for each sector. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap today chaired a meeting on preparations for the winter snowfall and directed all departments concerned to ensure active participation and prompt response so that residents do not face inconveniences during the season.

The DC emphasised the importance of a quick response to any emergency situation, noting effective coordination was crucial.

During the meeting, he instructed officials to remove vehicles parked on the National Highway-5 from Shoghi to Shimla, noting cars left on both sides of the road hinder snow removal. He also directed a trial run of snow clearance machines.

The Fire Department was asked to issue advisories warning people not to sleep near fireplaces and to switch off electrical appliances, particularly heaters, before sleeping. The DC also ordered an audit of heritage buildings and directed the Tourism Department to issue advisories for tourists and hold a meeting with the Hotel Association.

All Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) were instructed to hold similar meetings in their areas and prepare contingency plans within a week. They must coordinate with the Army, ITBP, NDRF and SDRF, ensuring timely storage of essential items such as rations, gas cylinders and diesel.

DC Kashyap also urged SDMs to maintain coordination with ‘Aapada Mitras’, trained volunteers in disaster management, to utilise their services if required during snowfall-related emergencies.

Finally, officials of the Jal Shakti Department and Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) were directed to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply during the winter season.
