In a bid to make Shimla an e-waste-free city, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Shimla, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Shimla, has launched a month-long e-waste collection drive across the town. Under the campaign, officials from the MC and Rotary Club members will collect discarded electronic items such as computers, televisions and mobile phones from households in all 34 wards under the Corporation’s jurisdiction.

The Joint Commissioner, Shimla MC, said around one tonne of e-waste was collected from various parts of the city during the celebration of International E-Waste Day, organised by the Rotary Club. He appreciated the club’s efforts in promoting environmental sustainability and expressed willingness to strengthen collaboration for expanding this eco-friendly initiative.

Highlighting the environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal, he said, “e-waste releases toxic chemicals that are harmful not only to humans but also to animals. If not managed properly, it can affect brain development and cause serious health disorders such as memory loss and cancer.”

The official further said the drive will be conducted in phases — initially focusing on hospitals and hotels before moving to residential areas. “Collection points will also be set up across the city. The e-waste gathered will be sent for recycling to ensure it can be reused responsibly,” he added.

The MC had undertaken a similar initiative last year.
