Shimla MC plans small parking lots in all 34 wards
To tackle parking woes in Shimla, the Municipal Corporation plans to construct small-capacity parking lots across all 34 wards under its jurisdiction. These lots will accommodate 12 to 15 vehicles each. Mayor Surender Chauhan stated that councillors have been directed to identify suitable locations in their respective wards for the project. Construction will begin as soon as land is finalised.
"These small parking lots will significantly ease parking issues in the town," said Mayor Chauhan. Additionally, four new multi-storeyed parking facilities near Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Vikasnagar, and the Auckland Tunnel are set to become operational this year, further increasing the town's parking capacity.
The corporation is also identifying spots for yellow-line parking zones to provide extra parking for locals and generate revenue.
Lack of parking remains a critical issue in Shimla, causing roadside vehicle parking, congestion and traffic jams. The problem worsens during peak tourist seasons in summer and winter when locals and tourists struggle to find parking spaces. The corporation's initiatives aim to address these challenges and improve mobility within the town.
