Shimla MC to hike property tax by 8%

SHIMLA, February 13

In order to increase the income sources, the Congress-led Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to hike property tax by 8 per cent in the budget for the financial year 2024-25.

With this, the corporation is expecting an additional income of around Rs 1.5 crore. As of now, the corporation is earning around Rs 21 crore by collecting property tax.

The budget for 2024-25 will be presented on February 15. This will be the first budget of Congress-led Municipal Corporation after it won the Municipal Corporation elections in 2023.

This year, the budget is expected to be of more than Rs 300 crore. Municipal Corporation Mayor Surinder Chauhan said the property tax will be hiked as per the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said the budget for the financial year 2024-25 is almost ready and this he has held meetings with the officials of the departments concerned.

Chauhan added that the main focus of the budget will be to increase the income sources of the corporation as well as the development of the town.

He said before preparing the budget, he also took the suggestions from the Deputy Mayor, Councillors and public of the town Apart from this, the corporation will also be leasing and renting out idle land across the town.

This will also help the corporation earn additional income.

A special package to encourage the use of e-vehicles will also be presented in the budget.
