To commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, celebrated nationwide as National Sports Day, APG Shimla University organised a two-day sports competition that drew participation from over 150 athletes, including university students, NDRF personnel from Jasoor (Kangra), local youth and school students.
The event was inaugurated by Registrar Prof Dr RL Sharma, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ramesh Chauhan and other university dignitaries. The competitions featured a wide range of games, including kabaddi, volleyball, badminton, chess, ludo, carom and boxing.
In volleyball, the NDRF team led by Inspector Ajay Yadav clinched the top spot, while school and university players excelled in kabaddi. In women’s volleyball, the Fearless Fighters team emerged victorious. In men’s kabaddi, the Young Blood Team from Government Senior Secondary School, Beolia, defeated the Solo Brothers to claim first place, while Fearless Fighters secured the women’s title.
Other winners included Rohit Suryavanshi (men’s table tennis), Ritesh and Gaurav (men’s chess), Samiksha and Pratibha (women’s chess), Jakin Munda (men’s carrom) and Palak (women’s carrom).
The winners were felicitated with certificates by the chief guests and dignitaries. Speaking on the occasion, Registrar Dr Sharma emphasised that sports not only improve physical and mental health but also nurture team spirit, leadership and discipline. He urged the youth to embrace sports as a positive way to combat social evils like drug addiction.
