Shimla to get 24x7 water supply soon
Shimla will soon receive a 24x7 water supply, thanks to the Shakroli water supply scheme, set to be ready by June this year. The town will receive an additional 67 million litres of water per day (MLD) from the Sutlej river, ending its water woes.
Currently, Shimla receives 46 MLD water daily from six sources: Gumma, Giri, Charith, Churot, Koti Brandi and Seog. The new scheme involves three water pumping stations at Shikroli, Dummi and Dwada villages, with water being lifted from Shikrodi village in Sunni.
Virender Thakur, Managing Director of Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited, said the project is almost complete, with 95 per cent of the 22-km pipeline and 90 per cent of the pumping station work finished.
Mayor Surender Chauhan said efforts were being made to prevent water shortages during the upcoming summer and monsoon seasons. With this project, Shimla’s bulk water supply will improve, providing 24x7 water to the town.
With a vision to provide 24×7 water supply to the town, a project to lift water from the Sutlej river was envisaged. As a part of the scheme, three water pumping stations were to be constructed at Shikroli, Dummi and Dwada villages in Shimla district.
