Shimla to get 4 new debris dumping sites

With an aim to curb illegal dumping and provide proper debris-disposal facilities to residents, the Shimla Municipal Corporation is set to construct four new dumping sites within its jurisdiction. According to the corporation, these sites will be developed near Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Kamna Devi, Bharari and Chalaunthi. The land for all four locations has already been identified.

Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan said the construction work is scheduled to begin in early 2026. “Our goal is to start work by the New Year,” he said. Stage-1 forest clearance has already been granted for the IGMC and Chalaunthi sites.

Chauhan added that he has held meetings with the officials concerned to ensure work begins as soon as possible and that the sites are completed at the earliest. “People often resort to illegal dumping in forests and on roadside slopes to avoid the cost of transporting debris to the existing dumping site at Bhariyal village. To address this, the MC decided to create more dumping sites within the city,” he said.

He further stated that both the MC and the Forest Department have intensified action against illegal dumping in the town. “The Forest Department and the MC are working jointly to curb this practice. Any vehicle caught dumping illegally will be seized. Strict action will be taken against anyone disposing of debris unlawfully, especially during night hours,” he added.
