In a major step towards digitalisation and to simplify bill payments, the Municipal Corporation, Shimla, will soon install QR code plates on all residential and commercial buildings under its jurisdiction. These unique plates will allow residents to pay property tax and garbage collection charges online simply by scanning the code.

In the first phase, the facility will cover property and garbage bills, while in subsequent phases, the payment of electricity and water bills will also be enabled. Each plate will be installed at a fee of Rs 100, payable by the property owner.

Apart from payments, the QR codes will also provide complete property details—including ownership, year of construction and the status of bills and taxes. The plates will be fixed at the entrance or any other spot chosen by the property owner.

The MC also plans to link the QR system with garbage collection and sanitation services. Sanitation workers will be required to scan the QR codes during their rounds to confirm doorstep garbage collection. To facilitate this, the corporation will provide workers with smartphones and smartwatches.

This initiative aims not only to modernise payments but also to ensure cleanliness and accountability across Shimla.
