The ongoing beautification of the historic Ridge in Shimla is set to be completed by the end of April. To enhance its visual appeal, cobblestone paving is being installed over the structure built to stabilise the sinking portion near the Gaiety Theatre. Additionally, intricate cobblestone patterns are being created to serve as an attraction for both tourists and locals.

Recently, Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan held a meeting with Public Works Department (PWD) officials overseeing the project. He directed them to accelerate the work to ensure timely completion. “The Ridge is one of the most popular tourist spots in Shimla, attracting lakhs of domestic and international visitors, especially with the presence of Christ Church. The beautification work is progressing swiftly, and cobblestone installation will make it even more inviting,” said Chauhan. He emphasised that timely completion would allow tourists and residents to fully enjoy the space.

The Ridge has long faced concerns due to subsidence, which led to visible cracks on the road, alarming both the public and the administration. In response, the Municipal Corporation sought expert advice. In 2019, engineering specialists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee conducted a geological survey and submitted their findings to the PWD.

Restoration of the sinking portion commenced in 2022 under the Shimla Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 67 crore. As part of the project, a 70-m-long and 10-m-wide structure was erected to stabilise the area.

With the finishing touches underway, the Ridge is on track to reclaim its charm as a picturesque and secure landmark for visitors to Shimla.
