Sirmaur tops in crime, criminal tracking network systems
Solan, August 9
In an achievement highlighting added efficiency in policing, Sirmaur district has topped yet again in the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) as per an assessment undertaken by the State Crime Records Bureau, Shimla. The district has attained this position twice in a row.
About CCTNS
The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) system kick-started in 2019 aims at developing an integrated policing system to enhance the efficiency of policing at various levels. It utilises various parameters for searching and managing crime and criminal data like the FIR number, case category, date range and details related to the crime, suspect, victim and property involved within the police fraternity.
Bilaspur district has secured the second slot followed by Dehra police district. Kinnaur, Nurpur police district, Shimla, Chamba, Baddi and Kullu districts come next. While bigger districts like Mandi and Kangra have been confined to the 10th and 13th slot, respectively, among 14 districts, Una has fared last and Solan stands at the 12th place reflecting poor adherence to this system.
As against 35.05 marks attained by Sirmaur, Una could muster barely 29.17 points, while Kangra was slightly better with 29.29 marks. Solan could barely secure 30.11 marks — a whopping difference of 4.94 marks — despite the fact that there were barely three sub-divisions as half of the district comprising Doon and Nalagarh sub-divisions was categorised into a separate police district.
Sirmaur has also topped amongst bordering districts like Kangra, Una, Bilaspur and Baddi, which are crime-prone, owing to their proximity to other high crime-rated states like Punjab.

The system further facilitates a search-based on vehicle details like registration number, chassis number and engine number thus enhancing the efficiency of solving every day crime. The police stations have been categorised into three categories with the one at Renuka attaining the optimum grading in its category.
Sirmaur Superintendent of Police (SP) Nishchint Negi, said this achievement created an added vigour amongst the staff to work with more determination. In a bid to monitor the CCTNS project implementation performance of all states and Union territories, the Ministry of Home Affairs has enlisted various parameters in Pragati software to decide the state-wise CCTNS performance ranking.
While parameters like FIR number, beat area, case category and date range (including year, month, or week are its basic tools for searching crime-related information), advances features enable a policeman to filter results based on crime details, suspect details, victim details, modus operandi and property involved. It facilitates connectivity between police stations and higher offices within a state. The system also enables horizontal connectivity with external entities and central agencies.
